Growing Patience

Gabriel was sitting quietly, working on a beautiful, colorful drawing when a delicious smell wafted in from the kitchen.

“What is that?” Gabriel wondered to himself.

Following the smell, he went into the kitchen and saw his mom cleaning.

“Hi sweetheart, everything okay? Did you finish your drawing?”

“Hi mom. Well… almost. But what’s that delicious smell?” Gabriel asked, full of curiosity.

“I put a cake in the oven. The chocolate one—your favorite. Are you happy?”

“YEEEES, so yummy! Can I have a slice? Pleeeaaase?” begged Gabriel, putting his hands together like he was praying.

“Ahah, of course, sweetheart… but only when it’s done baking,” his mom said, laughing.

“But I want it NOOOOW!!!” shouted Gabriel, upset.

“Gabriel, don’t be like that,” his mom said calmly. “The cake still needs an hour to bake. Why don’t you sit down and I’ll explain what patience means?”

“Okay…” Gabriel huffed as he sat down. “What is this patience, anyway?”

“Well, sweetheart, patience is the ability to wait for something you really want.”

“Pffff… but I don’t want to wait,” Gabriel grumbled.

“Let me tell you a story.

When your father and I were young, we went to school together. He had a huge crush on me, but I didn’t like him at the time, so I didn’t pay him much attention.

But your father didn’t give up: one day he brought me flowers, another day chocolates, another day a book he liked… and little by little, I started to feel something too…”

“Ewwww! I don’t want to hear about you and dad! Gross!” interrupted Gabriel.

“Oh no, sweetheart, there’s nothing gross about it,” his mom replied with a chuckle.

“I just wanted to tell you that your dad was patient. He waited for me to feel something for him too. He never forced me.

And remember: you should never force people to do something they don’t want to do. Okay?”

“Yes, sure mom, I get it. So now I should be patient and wait for the cake, right?”

“Exactly, sweetheart.”

From the oven came a beep beep.

“There we go, the cake is ready… and in a little while you’ll be able to have a slice.”

“I still have to waaaait??? But I’m hungryyyy!”

“You have to wait for it to cool down, or your tummy will hurt.”

“Okay mom… I’ll be patient.”

“That’s my good boy.”

Ten minutes later, Gabriel happily enjoyed a big slice of chocolate cake—his reward for being patient.

“Maybe patience tastes good after all,” he thought, nibbling on the cake.
